What is Big Learning?
Big Learning is, perhaps unsurprisingly, about helping you go BIG with your learning. It’s about taking the best of microlearning and building impactful and effective learner journeys, at scale. It’s about designing with reach and sustainable growth in mind – all without compromising the quality of your learning materials. Get it right, and Big Learning has the potential to truly differentiate your online learning offering and genuinely connect with the “always on” modern learner.
Design an experience that keeps people coming back
To deliver true value to your customers and their learners, your training needs to take people from “I don’t know what this is about” or “I don’t need any training” to “I’m an advocate of this new way of doing things” and “I want more training like that!”
By coming up with a program of small microlearning modules – rather than one-hit-wonder elearning courses – learners will keep coming back for multiple sessions, proving the impact your learning has on their development over time.

Get value from your existing content
As you start to scale up to deliver higher volumes of digital learning, you’ll save time and increase your reach if you don’t have to start from scratch with every project. Think about how you can reuse and recycle your existing content in brand new ways. The key here is not to think about a cut and paste conversion – rather, a digital transformation that maximizes the value of your existing materials. Using a range of channels to get your materials in front of learners will also increase participation.
Don’t worry – this doesn’t have to be a laborious process! If you have good content and a clear understanding of the learner experience, this will be quick and painless… We promise!
Consider these examples:
- A visual email campaign or video trailer that acts as a teaser for upcoming training.
- A fun quiz or diagnostic that engages learners in a topic, with data that can be used back in the classroom to break the ice
- Live social polls that allow classroom participants to answer questions and compare results anonymously in real-time.
- Digital build-your-own action plans that give learners a personalized set of actions to take forward.
What digital learning content do you already have that you could repurpose, to deliver more value to your learners? Build this into the planning of future elearning content too.
Polls are a great way to connect people to a topic at the very beginning of a learning journey. You can explore grey areas, challenge misconceptions or reach a group consensus early in the experience.

Use data to scale smartly
There would be nothing worse than producing a Big Learning program, scaling it and rolling it out in 30+ different markets, only to get feedback saying that learners are only engaging with half the micro-elements and failing your knowledge-check quizzes. It’s crucial to test your learning early on, and only scale what’s working.
Using data dashboards to drive your design means you don’t need to wait for feedback. You can test and iterate your learning early on, using insights from pilot groups and users in new markets, to make sure you tweak and improve before you scale up.
