Aspiration vs. reality in compliance training
A positive trend that comes through loud and clear is compliance and ethics professionals’ great belief in the power of well-designed learning:
- 89% of the professionals surveyed want to ensure that compliance training informs business strategies and key decisions
- 95% want to use compliance training to help change working culture
It’s exciting to be part of a sector with so much influence and potential!
But despite knowing what’s possible, many are struggling to turn these aspirations into reality. With many organizations still providing lengthy compliance courses and measuring them through completion, there’s a clear need to do something different. So, where do you start?
3 practical things you can do to address the key compliance training conundrums:
1: Deliver personalized learning AND deliver a program at scale
Although many organizations see the value of a personalized experience that targets an individual’s specific needs and risk areas, only 19% are using adaptive learning to bring this to life.
Start today: Which of your ethics or compliance topics are due for a refresh in the next few months? Look through your list and identify one where individuals in your organization would benefit from targeted information (clue: it’s probably 90% of them!).
Spend half an hour jotting down what you need to know about each individual to be able to direct them to the relevant content: role, location, prior knowledge, etc. When it comes to creating this learning further down the line, you’re already halfway to a simple branching diagnostic that directs individuals to relevant content only. You don’t necessarily have to create all this content from scratch; curate what you’ve already got into smaller chunks that make personalized learning pathways.

2: Design compliance training programs that meet the needs of both individuals AND regulators
All organizations are aware of these two audiences, but the stats suggest that the majority see them as mutually exclusive. Less than half (47%) of organizations are taking time upfront to make compliance materials as engaging and memorable as possible.
Start today: Check the pulse of your learners. Create a quick survey using Elucidat or another online tool and send it out to a focus group of learners. A couple of questions about them and their roles followed by a few questions on which learning experiences they’ve found the most and least useful and memorable, and you’ll have a great set of data to inform your next design.

3: Demonstrate both efficiency AND effectiveness of compliance training
Many learning professionals would like to generate meaningful data that can be used to measure and improve program effectiveness over time, but fewer than two in five are actively doing this.
Start today: Review the stats from a recent course and note down improvements for next time. If you use Elucidat, spend half an hour looking at your analytics dashboard. Which questions are people getting right and wrong? If people drop out of the course, where does that happen? Why?
If the stats show that it’s time to shake up your design, keep in mind the behavior change you need to see. Successful compliance courses are all about building an ethical culture that significantly reduces the risk of incidents. They need to encourage learners to stop and reflect, challenge their preconceptions and current behaviors and show them the benefits of making the right decisions.
